Sync & Backup
iCloud sync
Keeps devices in step, and keeps a copy off the device
What you write does not stay on this device alone. It also goes up to your iCloud. There is nothing to turn on or configure.
What sync does
Two things.
- 1It keeps a copy off the device. Lose the device or have it fail, and your records do not go with it. Sign in on a new device with the same account and they come back
- 2It keeps devices in step. What you write on iPhone appears on iPad, and editing on one follows through to the other
Not the same as a backup
Sync carries the state things are in right now. It does not keep past states.
So deleting a note on one device deletes it on the others, and in iCloud too. Undoing something deleted by mistake needs a backup file. There is more in Backup and restore.
Having both is the safer position. Sync is for losing a device, a backup is for deleting the wrong thing.
What syncs
- 1Notes and folders
- 2Anniversaries
- 3Flow entries. What you wrote, places you visited, the day's weather
- 4Calendar groups. The groups you made and what is in them
- 5View settings. Which calendars and task lists are shown
- 6Task order. The order you arranged by hand
Smaller things that build up inside the app, such as search history, are kept in step too.
Events and reminders are not carried by this app. iOS Calendar and Reminders sync them directly, and HyFlow only reads and displays them. So if an event is missing on another device, checking the iOS Calendar app first is quicker.
It takes time
Notes with many photos, or a long history, take a while to finish uploading.
- 1Open
Settings, tap the iCloud status line, and leave sync status open. While that screen is up the display will not turn off on its own, so syncing can keep going - 2Plug in the charger and connect to Wi-Fi
- 3Turn
Low Power Modeoff
If that screen shows something you need to fix yourself, start with that. Account checks and full storage will not move a single item no matter how long you leave it open, and the display turns off as usual in that case.
It does not have to finish in one go. Opening it now and then chips away at the queue.
Waiting to upload at the bottom of Settings is not an error. It is waiting its turn and will finish on its own if you leave it be.
Don't force quit the app
Swiping the app away because sync feels slow sends the work in progress back to the start. When it is slow, leaving it alone is faster.
